Biography

Ann ReidOur landscape reveals how humans and nature transform each other over time. I have witnessed the nature of this interaction growing up in the northwest and living on both sides of the Cascade Mountains where urban growth swept across fertile valleys and agricultural development over shrub-steppe landscape. There is a struggle to see our environment as economic development, abundant farmland or romantic pristine landscape. These vying perceptions create tensions about how land could or should be used. In response, nature shows us that shifting the natural order can lead to circumstances that threaten habitats, communities and livelihoods. Observing this landscape over time has allowed me to witness the change in human behavior and the environment in which we live in the northwest. This provides ideas to contemplate in my work.

My work comes from a love of drawing. The silhouettes are drawn on black Arches and cut with an exacto knife. They act as companions to the shadows, felting and sculptural elements.
